INTRODUCTION
One
fall morning many years ago I was awakened by
the birds singing outside of my window. The
alarm didn’t go off that morning. If it
hadn’t been for the birds singing I would
have been late. As I lay in bed for those few
extra minutes listening to the birds singing
their autumn songs I was enfolded in this feeling
that things were going to be all right. There
was this certainty that whatever happened in
my life I was going to be ok. |
 |
This
was particularly significant to me, as I’d
just spent the last year in therapy dealing
with the fact that I had been sexually molested
by my father. I was in danger of being kicked
out of school. I was headed downhill and headed
down fast. I was blessed that morning with the
singing of the birds. It was something that
changed my life.
The
change didn’t happen right away. It wasn’t
like some magical transformation. I had to take
small steps to make changes in my attitude and
improve my life. It seems that many times we hear
all the talk about attitude and just do it, just
be positive. These things are easier said than
done. Changing
a lifetime of behavior doesn’t happen
overnight. It happens one step at a time. Here
in this book are 52 steps you can take, most
of them I myself have taken, to begin the journey
towards a more positive attitude and a more
fulfilling life. Included with each step is
a page for reflection. How did this step work
for you, what were your experiences? Taking
the time to reflect will help you to see which
ones work best for you. When the task seems
too large we simply need to break it down into
smaller pieces.
I
was fortunate that I had that experience with
the birds, but one thing I’ve learned
over the years is that each one of us has within
us the ability to change our lives for the better.
We each have the strength to survive no matter
what happens in our lives. We only need to take
it one step at a time.
Things
with wings have always reminded me of that moment
with the singing birds. I discovered the parable
of the butterfly and took that for the theme
of this book.
